It’s Not Supposed To Be Easy

Dall-E refuses to generate an image of 2 dogs fighting — it’s against the rules.

There’s always something.

I used to think that life was supposed to be easy, when I was young and dumb, that living an easy life was the whole point, to maximize pleasure and minimize pain, such that people who lived a “good life” were people who lived an “easy” life.

But, there’s always something that comes up, some new annoyance, some new disturbance, some new nonsense that nobody asks for that pops up.

A few days ago, I let my dog outside, into my fenced backyard, in the morning, so he could do his business. A few seconds after letting him out, I heard a big ruckus in the backyard and I sprint to the backdoor and open it to find my dog fighting with the neighbor’s dog outside my backdoor.

In my yard.

I run out and grab my dog by the collar and try to pull the two dogs apart, and the neighbor’s dog bites my legs, putting a few holes in my calf in the process.

Once I get the dogs separated, the neighbor’s dog runs away, through a new gap in my wooden privacy fence.

The neighbor’s boys busted a part of the fence a while back by throwing a baseball against it. When this happened initially, the neighbor’s boys patched the fence up, but apparently, something had happened to this patch and the neighbor’s dog was able to jump through the gap.
