So, You Wanna Be A Teacher . . . Think Again.

Here is an email I received from a student on the 4th day of an accelerated online college writing course.

Hello Professor ______,

I really hate to start the semester like this, but here goes.

I really dropped the ball and made assumptions about this class (Composition and Rhetoric II), that it would be like my other online classes.. my assumptions were incorrect, and now I feel extremely rattled and behind..

I had assumed I could familiarize myself with my classes over the first few days of school, and work through the expectations and deadlines, up until I got a notification that I received a 0 on an assignment and when I went to investigate I realized you have been posting assignments and I have been missing them due to my incorrect assumptions.

You are very clear about not accepting late work and I respect that, but I completed everything regardless and for the sake of trying and hoping you can empathize with the growing pains of a new semester.. I just have to ask if you would still consider giving me credit or partial credit? We hit the ground running and I just didn’t realize it fast enough. Now that I know I will be on top of it.

I also wanted to ask if we will we have an assignment every day, posted at midnight and due the following night at midnight? I work as a server/bartender and have days I am at work until 2 am and back at 10 am. I will be trying…
